Deborah Smith

My work is about defining the movement that I see in a piece of driftwood and contemplating its journey into my hands.

Each piece of wood has been shaped by motion; the twisting and turning of the branch as it sought the sun’s light, and the rolling and spinning in currents, as it traveled to water’s edge.

Using round reed, dye and the ribbed weaving technique, I strive to capture this movement.

It is my hope, that my sculpted interpretation will accurately portray my original vision, suggest that vision to others, and evoke a sense of tranquility and wonder.
